I worte that I had my nipples culture to detemine if I indeed had thrush
when there were no outward signs in me or either of my nurslings. Only
extreemly sore and burning nipples.
Arly asked if the procedure was painful. No, it was not. The doctor- a GP
who is also an IBCLC- took two wet cotton swabs and rubbed them gently on my
nipples. The he rubbed them onto a slide and "read" them. I wasn't an LC at
the time, but was (and am a LLL Leader). But right there in the doctor's
office I was a mom in pain. So, I may not have noted all of the steps in
the procedure. I just remember thinking it was weird having my nipples
cultured!

I have very deep crevices in my nipples and one bifurcated nipple. I
understand that this type of nipple my be more vulernable to thrush as there
are more dark, moist places for thrush to grow.

Also, I recently heard a challeng e to weather there is really so much
thrush and a concern that we are over treating it. I can assure you that if
left untreated for to long it can spread into the milk ducts. Then the
whole breast burns - especially during let down. I've had thrush in the
ducts and it is no picnic!
