SUCK & SUCKLE: My earlier interrogatory post on pacifiers was more directed
at the "health care" and "health advice" care givers (MDs, Hospital
Management, RNs, LCs, etc.). As they are the ones who set the stage (before
& after advertising) for what mother's choose to do. As a realist I
understand a large per cent of mothers AND fathers choose and will always
choose convenience over "better" care.

One of my patients, in just today, who now has a great properly growing smile
after only about 9 months FJO treatment (see SmilePage.com), was "pacified"
for over 7 years with a variety of pacifiers, including the type just
recalled. Her father in particular used them to quiet her. I'll get her
photos on my site SOON so you can see how devastating to the mouth, bone,
etc. this can be. Her dad thought her severely deformed and cooked teeth were
inherited from mom.....but the pacifier was doing the damage all along...and
he was just making it worse and worse. Education of patients and providers
is key here.

PACIFIER RECALL: The new recall raises a more important issue on pacifiers.
If the CPA--Consumer Protection Agency is concerned with the few pacifiers
that have separated without a major adverse incident.....then shouldn't it be
even more concerned with either 1) the interference they pose to all
essential breast feeding, 2) the devastating effects that pacifiers can have
deforming mouth bones OR 3) the carcinogen reportedly contained therein =
NITROSAMINES. Nitrosamines and infants with exposed blood brain barriers?

PACIFIER MAKING COMPANY 1-800-help#s confirm NITROSAMINES may still be
present, but they insist they abide by accepted government production
standards. Well, government standards need to be changed. Even though
present at only a few ppb--parts per billion, nitrosamines are reported to be
the most potent carcinogens known to man. This is an overlooked area of
infant exposure to an "environmental" hazard. Furthermore, there appears to
be a direct link (already published) between the combined potentiating
effects of NITROSAMINES and SOY and the major modern day increase in diabetes
and infant brain tumors! Ever wonder why some brands of pepperoni have citric
acid added, per the label?

Here again, it is up to health care providers and researchers to know the
literature....and furthermore demand further research to separate bias, fact
& fiction. Properly designed research, using a rather simple protocol I
might add, would probably confirm a more important and urgent reason for
broader CPA pacifier recalls!

Smile-On,
David C. Page, DDS
