I am so incredibly excited by this accomplishment and wanted to share. I
have been an LLL leader for nearly 9 years, became an IBCLC in 2010, and
started my private practice this year (when all my children entered
school).

When I started my practice, I wanted to know how insurance worked and spent
many frustrating hours on the phone with insurance on behalf of mother's to
figure out how to get coverage for them due to the ACA requirements that
went into effect last year for some plans. I spent many hours on the phone
with two companies in particular (even shedding a few tears- and I am not
ordinarily a crier). I was told there was absolutely no way to get a
contract with UHC that they didn't contract w/ IBCLCs. When asked who
their in network provider was for breastfeeding support and counselling I
was given a pump distributor.

Long story short, some kind person at UHC took pity on me and sent me to a
local contract rep for UHC, who helped me get a contract with them. I
signed it nearly a month and a half ago and waited impatiently for it to be
executed.

I just received notice tonight that it has been signed and filed! I am
officially an in- network provider (IBCLC) for UHC. Has anyone else
contracted with UHC in other states?

This is a sweet victory for me and I am grinning ear to ear tonight It's
the principal of the matter- many more moms have access to help, that
didn't before and now UHC knows how to contract with IBCLCs in AZ.

Warmly,
Desiree Allison, LLLL (Chandler & Tempe), IBCLC, Chandler, AZ
