I am looking for info to pass along to a mother who works at the
airfield and constantly inhales fumes from jet fuel and glycol, the
de-icer used on planes. She is wondering if this can contaminate her
breastmilk and make it unsafe for her baby. The glycol especially
concerns her because she says she can taste it when they are de-icing a
plane.

Secondly, her six day old baby boy is causing sore nipple for mom and
poor weight gain for himself because he does not relax his tongue and
bring it beyond the lower gum line. We worked very hard and had no
success. Even with a finger-feeder, he keeps his tongue at the back of
his mouth. With vigorous sucking with the finger-feeder it took him 15
minutes to take 15 c.c.'s. Repeatedly putting downward pressure on his
tongue caused him to break suction, but his tongue did not extend
forward.

When he cries his tongue is forward and there is no tongue-tie. Mother
has nipples too broad to fit into a nipple shield, so she will pump and
heal for 24 hours while finger-feeding him.
