Subject: newborn hypoglycemia [bcc][faked-from]

One of the hospitals in town recently implemented a new hypoglycemia
protocol. EVERY baby has a bedside glucose checked at 30 MINUTES OF
AGE, and if it is <40 they must have an ENTIRE OUNCE (30cc) of formula.
Approximately 25% of babies are receiving this.

My question is, is anyone out there aware of any other hospital anywhere
doing this?? I am writing a letter the the committee of Pediatricians
who approved this, and the neonatologist who is not willing to consider
the arguments of the lactation staff, and the nurse who accuses them of
not putting the welfare of the babies before concerns about sabatoging
breastfeeding!! I plan to include the WHO literature review and the ABM
recommendations, plus references supporting the fact that duration is
decreased by artificial nipples and supplements...any other ideas? I
was going to point out that an ounce is an inappropriate volume, but
then noticed that the ABM protocol suggests "10-15cc/kg".

Mostly I am interested in knowing if this is happening anywhere
else...if not, I can add that noone else in the WORLD is doing this!

Thanks-

Kathy Leeper, MD, IBCLC
