Coach Smith here.

Two areas of human behavior that are VERY difficult to intellectually
separate from personal experiences are sex and eating. Breastfeeding
(sort-of) involves both, at least in cultures where breasts are sexy.
(interestingly, both involve Oxytocin).

A good breastfeeding experience can help, but the temptation for the
professional is to think "it was easy for me - what's her problem?"

A bad breastfeeding experience, especially if unresolved, can massively
hinder and lead to the attitude that "I couldn't breastfeed, therefore it's
hard for everyone."

Some of the best in the BF business include those who are childless or male
(think of Larry Gartner and Audrey Naylor) and those who breastfed many
children (think of Ruth Lawrence and Marianne Neifert).

Unresolved grieving over unexpected reproductive experiences probably colors
a LOT of professional "advice."
