Jean,
I know what the WHO guidelines are but if those are ever met (!), the
consumer will find products on the shelf that they can choose from that they
themselves have no knowledge of in order to make an informed choice (ie. if
they chose to formula feed then they also want to know whether the formula
they chose has the essential ingredients that the others do or if there are
differences between them etc.) So if only the doctors are to be advertised
to should the formula's *not* be offered to the general public? Therefore
should they not be under prescription *only*? And if so does that not add
further financial burden to this segment of the population to the benefit of
physicians (who write the prescriptions and see the mothers to change the
prescriptions) and formula companies?
Please don't think for one second that I am standing up for formula,
I just would like to see the realistic big picture in a way that will help
me to fight this tragedy. I believe that the people who work for formula
companies can't all be unethical, they just haven't been able to uderstand
how they can have a successful product without direct advertising. If we
are to really make changes we need to develop that vision ourselves.
We all know what we "don't" want them to do, but what "do" we want
them to do?

Jennifer
