When I was the LC at our community hospital we had a similar situation. Birth
mom and adoptive mom were in close contact through the pregnancy and adoptive
mom, grandma, and dad were present at delivery time. The baby was put to
breast soon after delivery. Adopting mom had been pumping for some time and
had colostrum . I was called by delivery staff at that time because they were
a bit put off at first and asked lots of questions about how do we handle
this. The birth mother and adoptive mother had communicated their feelings
and wishes to eachother well before they set foot in our hospital but we
asked the birth motheragain how she wanted things to proceed while she was
our patient. Knowing and being educated about the importance of starting on
the right foot with breastfeeding she wanted the baby to be able to
breastfeed as much as possible. The adoptive mother did visit at the hospital
quite a bit during the 48 hours the baby was there. She had the permission of
the birth mother to breastfeed. She did use a SNS which I helped her with.
And our hospital was accomodating as much as we could be remembering that as
long as the birth mother was giving consent, it was ok( since it still is
legally her baby at this point in time. ) She went on to BF this baby but
lived 2 hours away. She did seek assistance from another LC once home.
