I have been to many conferences related to breastfeeding. My favorite was
International Theory...Art and Science...the one in Orlando...I remember my
first one there too...I felt like a "lactation groupie". I couldn't get
enough! But, with four years since my last "big" conference I was looking
forward to stepping back into it. when I went to my first ILCA conference I
had a feeling the energy would be the same. I was not disappointed. While
much of the information was not new to me, the presentation was and I
thoroughly enjoyed it. And again, like a groupie among the gurus and wise
women of lactation land, I felt proud of what I do. Something I have found
across the board with every interaction has been a level of respect and
camaradarie not often seen. This profession for helping mothers and babies
crosses over as women helping women. The feeling that we are all in this
together to make a difference was quite evident. I walked with Karin
Caldwell, sat in front of Barbara Wilson Clay, took a picture for Linda Smith
and conference attendees, chatted with Chele Marmet and thanked her for her
hand expression technique that I just finished using to fill a cup of milk
for my toddler at home. Again, I felt like such a "groupie" for lack of a
better word. These women are my "stars". People I admire who have taught me
so much! I looked around at room after room filled with women absorbing
information that would make a difference to the breastfeeding relationship of
at least one mother and baby...how many people were there? That's how many
babies?

When I would be thinking, well, of course, I know that....I would notice eyes
get wide and jaws drop as women frantically took notes excited with the new
knowledge. I smiled remembering that was me not too long ago. I took away
reinforcement of knowledge I already had, some new knowledge to think about
and the realization that as we know more about breastfeeding, we also know we
have more to learn about breastfeeding. With the answers comes more
questions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of volunteers who made this year's
ILCA Conference possible. From an outsider's view, it looked great!

Best,
