Hello everyone
This is the first time I have written but I have read your great posts for
the last 3 years. I am an RN IBCLC working for the USAF doing home
visitation for young families with children ages 0-3 years. I am requesting
help from all the wonderful sources out there for one of the families I
visit. I have permission to post from this worried mother.
I visit a mother with a 7 week old infant girl. She has been exclusively
breastfed from birth. In fact, mother is tandem nursing a 15 month old
toddler also. The infant weighed 11 lb 5 oz on the 10th of Oct up from 8 lb
at birth. Mother nurses on demand. One week postpartum mother developed
mastitis and was put on antibiotics. Then of course all three developed
yeast infections. Infant had oral thrush, mother breast and toddler diaper
rash. While on the antibiotics, mother noted small amounts of visible blood
in the infant's diaper. She wasn't too concerned right away and waited until
she completed antibiotic therapy. However, at 5 weeks, infant still has
visible blood in stool. Mother has taken infant into pediatric clinic and
they wanted her to wean because of possible allergies to mother's diet.
Mother has not weaned.
Mother has now been on a wheat, dairy, egg, soy, citrus, corn, legume,
peanut, tree nut, shellfish, strawberry free diet since first blood seen in
stool (about 5 weeks). She is now thinking of going oat free also.
Infant's stools are emerald green and seedy, with visible blood. She is
spitting up after most feedings and has "projectile" (mother states she
shoots spit up about 6 feet) vomiting once a day or so, Infant developed
eczema at about 3.5 weeks of age. Mother treating with moisture cream and
occasional steroid.
Newborn labs have come back clear.
Other labs came back that infant is anemic and has elevated (don't know
level) white count. Mother is now giving infant multi vitamins. Infant had a
barium enema with nothing definitive showing up. Radiologist took x-ray of
colon, and stated it was "spasmodic....like an infection". Pyloric stenosis
ruled out. Mother called me today and is becoming frustrated with her diet
and talking of weaning. She really wants to continue breastfeeding but has
concerns for her daughter's health.
While I was writing this, she called and said she had a lapse of sanity
yesterday and ate two homemade brownies!! Today infant's stools are yellow,
seedy and NO visible blood. The clinic is also wanting to test infant's
stools for parasites.....just to rule them out. Everyone is grasping at
straws. My advice today was for mom to eat another brownie!

Anyone have any experience with a situation like this? Any suggestions?
Support? We were also looking for Dr Jack Newman's email address...I know it
has changed recently.
Thank you in advance
Respectfully

Donna
