In response to Kathleen's email regarding guilt, breastfeeding and Baby Friendly. The criteria for BFI designation is 80% of the babies must be exclusively breastfeeding on discharge. This ensures support for mothers who are unable to breastfeed exclusively for medical reasons and for mothers who have made an informed decision not to breastfeed. In a Baby-Friendly Hospital, mothers who are bottlefeeding will be provided individually with information and support for mixing formula, correct storage and handling etc to ensure safety and nutrition for baby. This part of the Baby-Friendly (TM) Initiative must be marketed since the focus is on providing all information to all mothers. Please see a new handout developed by the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada on " Instruction on the use of infant formula in Baby-Friendly Hospitals" which was reprinted with permission from the UK Baby-Friendly Initiative. It can be downloaded from the website at www.geocities.com/hotsprings/falls/1136 . While visiting please take time to sign the guestbook,
Maureen Fjeld, IBCLC
