Melissa Vance asked why breastfeeding in a pool might logically be banned.
How about the gastrocolic reflex, the one that triggers stooling when a baby
is sucking and swallowing? This common reflex might be a good reason to ask
mothers not to feed a young baby IN the water, but I don't see that it would
keep a mom from nursing her baby (or indeed, bottle feeding her baby, for
those who don't breastfeed) while sitting at the edge of the kiddie pool
watching her toddler in the water, especially if she keeps a towel handy to
manage any leakage that might occur. A mother knows her own baby's patterns
best. Some moms probably have babies who have NEVER pooped while feeding,
while others know the subtle signs their baby makes when getting ready to
push. I think women should be encouraged to judge for themselves whether or
not to nurse while in the water. It's not as if no older kid has ever pooped
in a baby pool!
