HI everyone,
I have been off line for a few months and glad to be back.
I want to share this case with this group and hear some feed back.
Mom delivered via c/s and baby found to have imperferated anus, transfered to
have temporary colostomy and mom tried to establish a milk supply. After a
week, mom developes a wound infection and is put on metronidazole and
ampicillin. The OB caring for her tells her she must pump and discard her milk
for the next 10 days. No one but this OB were involved with this decision. I
tried to enlighten him that this drug was safe and also in this case to
consider the RISK/BENEFIT ratio. All fell on deaf ears. When I talked to the
mom she said she did not want to harm her baby.
Here's the kicker, this was not the mom's OB, he was on vacation and he is
fine with brfdg and metronidazole. Also, who owns the patient? When I was
asking around for support pediatrcians said that this should be their call not
the OB's, at least a call to confer.
This mom, who had a poor supply ended up weaning. I plan to follow this baby
for quite awhile and keep notes.
Any ideas on how to get OB's to understand that the mom's milk is a pedi
issue? Any comments?
Glad to be back.
