"the C/S moms I see would NEVER be able to express colostrum--they
are like
the babies, and so out of it, I can't imagine that they would be
willing to
day 1. That's when most of the supplements are given, because day 1
is a
problem for all the moms, but the C/S's are really miserable. It's
really
sort of expected that they won't be able to feed, although of course
some do
and the effort is usually made. I'm not sure if we are treating
them fairly
or not, but they can barely move or keep their eyes open for the
first 12
hours."

Epidurals for vag deliveries has gotten a bad rap on LN, but for C/S
I have found them great. The moms are almost always able to nurse
in recovery. (It's not very practical while she's got one arm
strapped down with a BP cuff and the other strapped down with an IV
in the OR, but by the time she's been stitched up and is not
strapped down, baby is usually ready.) It's the moms who have had
general anesthesia that are more likely to be too "out of it" to be
able to nurse or express colostrum. Of course, baby also neds to be
stable. The C/S baby may be more likely to need to be in NICU
related to the reason for the C/S. We do not, however, require all
C/S babies to spend some time in special care like some hospitals
do. Assuming no complications, I can see no reason why a C/S mom
couldn't try to express colostrum in the RR. She would need some
help "catching" whatever she expresses as she isn't able to sit up
straight yet (which is a more practical position for
pumping/expressing).
