Dear All,
Some of you have written to Carol Bellamy on this and that is great, but if
you have done/plan to do this, what about copying your letter to the
National Committee of your country.
If you go to the UNICEF website:
http://www.unicef.org/uwwide/
you will read:
The 37 National Committees for UNICEF, mostly in the industrialized world,
are non-governmental organizations that support UNICEF in advocacy for
children and fund-raising.
and from UK site:
UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from governments, the
public and greeting card sales
The National Committees, haven't lived, breathed and eaten breastfeeding
like those in the BFI and they don't get exposed to the views of volunteer
breastfeeding supporters and health professionals interested in Baby
Friendly all the time, so, who knows, maybe they have no idea how outrageous
we think the idea is. They probably think this is a good way to get
themselves out of the perpetual penury most charities seem to live in these
days.
So, if you want to influence decisions, it might be a good idea to send a
copy of your letter to your National Committee. You could tell them, for
instance (if you write as an individual) that you will not want to receive
their publications, buy their cards, donate to their appeals, or whatever,
if they have links with a company or companies which manufacture products
under the scope of their own code (joint with WHO). this may influence
them, and they, in turn, may have internal influence.
