Yeah, I was talking in general about bili babies, nothing specific going on
right now. Just trying to get ammunition for the inevitable.

Absolutely! I tell the mom that I EXPECT the baby to drop to X weight by 3
days and that s/he "probably" won't get back to birth weight until 2 weeks
- then, when she comes in at 7 days and the baby is nearly back to birth
weight, I can crow to her about how WONDERFUL that she has already got the
baby back to birth weight and that she is doing such a great job and I hope
she is really proud of herself because I sure am, etc, etc. If the 7 day
check is less than wonderful, I can still say good things, but also correct
intervals of bf, reevaluate latch, etc. If at 2 wks the baby still isn't
quite at BW, I can say he is almost there, and recheck in a few days.
Seems to work for me.

The baby in question at birth indeed looked puffy and saturated, and
dropped to 9 LB 2 oz at 1 wk of age. Losing 2 LB was SCARY, but at the
same time, the kid actually looked a little more "normal", but it was nerve
wracking to see him drop so far.
