Phone orders have to be taken by an RN at least in Tennessee and must be counter-signed by the MD within 24 hours. The insurance companies want referrals properly done.  This usually means hand-written on proper forms for the type insurance done.  If it is on a prescription pad, that may be sufficient.  The office staff of the referring pediatrician should handle the referral.

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but could someone please tell me if it's okay for a non-RN IBCLC to take a phone order for an ENT referral from a Pediatrician?  It's not an order for meds or tests.  TIA
