When I first set up my private practice, a group of pediatricians spoke to
me about being their "referral" LC. They had previously employed an LC but
had eliminated her position before they learned of my new practice. Their
main complaint with their previous LC was that she had not communicated
enough with them. So I initially sent them notes on all phone calls as well
as reports on all home visits done. The notes on the phone calls have long
since ceased, but I continue to send reports even when the consult was only
for "confidence boosting". I have heard from my clients that their
pediatricians often mentioned to them how pleased they were to get a report
from me and how impressed they were that a lactation consultant would send
them a report. So I look on it as a means to build rapport with the
pediatricians in my community as well as reporting on clinical concerns.
