Many thanks to those of you who responded to my original post about my
plan to relactate in order to provide breastmilk for my 17-year old son
who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease less than a month ago. I appreciate
the research ideas which have been very helpful as I try to gain a better
understanding of Crohn's disease in general, and the clinical uses of
human milk. Thanks also for some great dietary ideas for the treatment of
Crohn's. I am half-way through the relactation protocol that Lenore
Goldfarb and Jack Newman have written and advised me on. I am taking Ortho
1/35 at bedtime and 20 mg. domperidone q.i.d. I am beginning to feel and
see a difference in these saggy, 50-year old breasts! The veins are coming
back, I have grown a cup size and I am able to palpate glandular tissue.
Two more weeks and I will stop the Ortho 1/35 and continue taking
domperidone and will add Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle and begin to pump
with the Medela Symphony breastpump I am renting. My plan is to pump every
3 hours night and day and every other weekend (my weekend off of work),
every 2 hours during the day. My family is graciously supporting my
efforts and helping to make this possible. In fact, some have requested
milk samples when I get to that point! I even have the support of our
family doctors who are very interested in what this might do for Justin. I
was able to get my doctor to draw a baseline prolactin level and Justin's
doctor has agreed to get baseline IgA, IgE and IgG levels on him so we can
track changes as he consumes the breastmilk. If any of you can think of
any other lab values that would be good to know as we delve into this
project, please feel free to advise! I am open to anyone who has an
interest in researching the clinical uses of breastmilk and might want to
follow our progress. I want to contribute in any way I can, so if you know
of anything I need to be documenting on this journey, again, please advise!
I have great faith in the healing power of human milk and my gut feeling
is that I will be successful in producing a good supply for Justin. He is
willing to drink it "straight" and is actually becoming very enthusiastic
about the effect it might have on his over-all health. His G.I. doc will
also be monitoring his progress by doing follow-up endoscopies and
colonoscopies. Again, thanks for the support many of you have given. I
know you understand how important this is to me because like me, you are
all mothers and have the heart and compassion for our children.

Gratefully,
Jane Fogdall, BS, RN, IBCLC
