Good morning wise ones,

I am in the middle of a debate and hope some of you might share some
thoughts. Currently my hospital is developing a pain relief
policy/procedure to be used with our newborns. One of the relief measures
is to use a sucrose pacifier during painful procedures such as
circumcisions, lab work etc. One of my breastfeeding mothers was very
upset to see her son, following a circ. ,return to her room with a pacifier
in his crib when she asked that one not be used at all. Of course the knee-
jerk response was that a breastfeeding baby will not be given this
option....... What are others of you using to help with pain relief in your
nurseries? If you are using the pacifiers, are you giving the education to
the breastfeeding mothers before the procedure? What are other options
(besides immed. comfort at the breast) you are offering breastfed babies
for comfort during and following a painful procedure. There is a
Children's Hospital here in town that is using Dum Dum lollipops during
procedures, anyone else using these? without getting into a debate over
circs, I would like some thoughts on the pain relief issue please.
Thanks,I know I will get some great ideas here!
