Neither Pur-lan nor Lansinoh would be indicated if there were yeast in the
diaper area. Nor can I understand how a crisp glaze over irritated tissue
would be soothing. Egg white is a powerful allergen in some people, and to
apply it directly to broken skin might not be wise. It is possible that the
observed effect could be related to a change of skin pH, but this could be
achieved with a dilute solution of baking soda and water, which would be
more soothing to the infant's irritated skin. Just because something worked
once for someone may be coincidental. Actions should not be taken without a
well-considered rationale which seeks to understand how an intervention
works, takes into account its risks, and looks at available alternatives.

There is a lot of scientific information available to us about fungal
infections, and many accepted therapies of proven efficacy-- many of them
over-the-counter like gentian violet. In my opinion, clinical suggestions
should be accompanied by either refs from the lit, or an outcomes-based
report from one's own clinical experience consisting of more than one or two
observations. One of the most serious complaints about LCs that I heard at
the AAP convention concerned methods for treating presumed but undiagnosed
fungal infections by an LC. This is not meant as a personal slam against the
person who posted, who I am sure is well-meaning. However all of us need to
be wary of accepting suggestions uncritically.
