To the Members of Lactnet:

Earlier today I forwarded an email that I received from my local email list
which stated that a prominent local Rabbi had received a call from the
police today that the formula which has hurt so many babies in Israel is
also being sold here and was poisoned by Arab terrorists.

I sincerely apologize for my post. I realize now that my email came across
as inflammatory and may have caused hurt, particularly to my Lactnet
list-sisters in Arab countries. I assure you all that it was certainly not
intended in that spirit. The primary purpose of my email was to let
everyone know that this formula is not just being sold in Israel, but here
in America, and that we should warn our American moms who may be using it
that it is dangerous to infants. That part of the email is completely
accurate. The secondary purpose of my email was to underscore what is all
too obvious to us -- that breastfeeding is the only truly safe method of
feeding our babies. However, not only was I too quick to post before being
sure of the accuracy of the information, but it was unnecessary and
potentially hurtful to include the part of the email regarding the rumoured,
and now believed to be untrue, 'poisoning.' From what I understand, the
rumours of terrorism are flying in Israel, and I made things even worse
through my post.

I am glad that Esther Grunis has more accurate information and that it seems
the formula was not sabotaged. I am still saddened by what these poor
babies and their families are going through, but it certainly heartens me
that this was not an act of terrorism, because I would hate to see tensions
further inflamed in the Middle East (which is, ironically, what my post may
have intentionally done). In an effort to halt the rumours, I have
forwarded the information to my local email list (3000 members) that Esther
sent regarding the absence of Vitamin B1 in the formula and not terrorism,
as the reason for the illness in babies who have comsumed this formula.

Again, I apologize if my post caused anyone to feel offended and slurred --
it was certainly not intended to do so, but I will be more sensitive in the
future.

Sincerely,

Julie
