Nikki asks, "Why doesn't the physican know the difference between
autocrine control and the milk-stat setting in the first few weeks
postpartum?"
Same reason they know so little about breastfeeding in general-it
just wasn't considered important enough to teach them in med school
and they don't consider it important enough to add to their existing
knowledge base now!
This is frequently a tough one to approach as I suspect the doc
feels we are saying he/she didn't do the job right. After all,
retained placenta will be most likely blamed on the delivering doc.
Some will be so defensive they can't consider it. A few will be
open to the suggestion to look into it. There are docs who are
defensive about anything we may suggest to a mom, but I think this
issue hits the most nerves.
Have any of you out there found a really diplomatic way to approach
a doc with this concern/possibility? I'm not talking about those
wonderful docs who heed every suggestion we might offer. I'm
talking about the ones who range from somewhat supportive of us to
downright hostile.

Meanwhile, is a second opinion an option for this mom, Nikki? Or is
her insurance one of those that makes this a downright difficult or
even expensive alternative?

Winnie
