Okay...here's my 2 cents worth.

Yes, a hematocrit of 35% is listed as the MEAN value for a 2 month-old in
Harriet Lane.  However, 2 standard deviations below the mean (which would
still be in the "normal range")  is listed as 28% (or a hemoglobin of 9.4)  I
personally would NOT supplement an otherwise thriving infant for a hemoglobin
above 9.  Of course, if there were any symptoms, or cardiopulmonary disease,
it would be entirely different.

So, at the risk of sounding like Dr. Newman...we shouldn't treat only the
numbers.
