A good clinical reason NOT to offer solids early is that it is usually prior
to the facial reshaping. Ever notice how babies have thick, fat pads in
their cheeks? Their gum lines are right up against their cheeks. Nothing can
get between the gum line and the cheek.

About 6-8 months of age, the fat has reduced considerably, and there is
actually pouch room between the gums and the cheeks. They can move food
around their mouths, into their cheeks, chew, liquify, play, basically
experiment with what's in their mouths.

Watch a little one, and see how they chew on their tongues after a certain
age. It's like they realize they can move their tongue into the cheek, and
play games with a new found tissue.

I like the thought that *they* need to prove it is clinically reasonable to
introduce solids. What, exactly, is missing in the diet? Does the solid food
being offered actually have this nutrient? Is the nutrient readily
available?

Best wishes,

What is a good clinical reason to introduce solis prior to 6 months? I have
just read the new joint publication from the Health and UNICEF called,
"Weaning: Starting solid food" From:
http://www.babyfriendly.org.uk/pdfs/weaning_leaflet.pdf They make a comment
about if mothers choose to introduce solids prior to 6 months to avoid
typical allergy foods, but what is a good clinical (medical) reason for
introducting solid food prematurely? They suggest that food should never be
given prior to 4 months!!! I would have thought 6 months or there abouts?

Blessings,
