Perhaps it will help hospitals to develop protocols about how to deal
with these cases. Thanks Esther.

First of all, good luck with getting your degree. I am a non-nurse LC
and I still believe that breastfeeding is not a medical issue at all, so
don't let getting a degree make you medicalize it!!
I am sitting with 4 nurses next Sunday to revise our hospital
breastfeeding protocols. We have created a committee of breastfeeding
passionate nurses from the various departments to help improve the level
of breastfeeding care the moms are getting. I would love to hear about
other hospital protocols. How long do you let babies go without
feeding? If the birth was uneventful, and even natural by some fluke,
how long do we let babies sleep without annoying them to jumpstart them
to feed?
Our former protocol called for us to start intervening at 6 hours pp if
the babies did not feed in the delivery room. I would like to change
that. Unless babies are small, glucose challenged, or should be fed,
for whatever reason, I would like to leave them alone even for 24 hours
with lots of skin to skin. Is this possible if moms are going home at
48 hours pp??
If anyone can share your hospital protocol for breastfeeding, I would be
ever so grateful!!
Thanks,
Esther Grunis, IBCLC
