At an inservice the other day, a question arose about bootle feeding
info. The state of Virginia now has these packets that were designed by the
governor's wife. It is a box divided into sections on all sorts of parenting and
postpartum issues. It is very well made and we are looking to use this in lieu of
our specifically made hospital packets. Somebody brought up a concern she had
regarding bootle feeding info. She feels that how to bottle should be in the
packets so those moms who need to supplement whether it be EBM or formula know
how to correctly bottle feed. Now, in our packet we already have storage
guidelines. She had a niece who wasn't doing that right. Several people then
chimed in that they too think it is a good idea.
I shared w/ them my concern that as with formula in discharge packs that
this could be a set up for failure and lead families to believe that
bottlefeeding is the natural flow to breastfeeding. Their argument is that we are not
teaching them what to do if that is what they decide to do. You know-new, tired
and brain dead parents at home in the first few weeks feeling without a
resource.
Of course, this nurse says she is supportive of BF but is the first to come
up with these sort of questions.
I do work in a very BF supportive hospital. However, I feel i could be
steamrolled on this. Any suggestions on a potential compromise?

TIA,
Allyson Michaels RN, IBCLC
