Your book may be old, but this is still current teaching.
This was a question on my anatomy test this week. We are being taught that
neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus secrete factors that regulate the
hormones of the anterior pituitary. The factors are carried by the hypophyseal
portal vein system to the anterior pituitary into a capillary bed.
TSHreleasing factor acts on the thyrotropic cells of the endocrine tissue in the
anterior pituitary telling it to release thyroid stimulating hormone. TSH , using
the capillary bed system, then enters general circulation, reaches it target
organ, the thyroid, and stimulates the production of thyroid hormones T3 and
T4.
I really am enjoying a deeper understanding of the physiology and applying
it to lactation.

Sincerely,
Tricia Hunt , IBCLC, LLL Leader, Nursing School Student, and mother to three
Becca, Grace, and Claire.

My book says TSH comes from Ant. Pituitary and the rate of release of TSH is
regulated by a substance from the hypothalmus. But it's an old book :-) Pat
