Dear Lactnet Friends:

One does NOT need to be a nurse nor any licensed medical professional to be
IBCLC.

In the US, a number of highest level organizations (the CDC, the Institutes
of Medicine, the Surgeon General) have reinforced the need for
breastfeeding. The Surgeon General specifically endorsed the IBCLC.

At the same time, the IBLCE has made it more difficult to obtain the
credential. I know of several places in my region that would love to hire
IBCLCs; if the demand goes up and the number of IBCLCs isn't there to fill
it, what will happen?

warmly,
