The promotional samples of artificially processed cow's milk that are given out in the hospital are NOT free and NOT a gift. The marketing costs of this type of promotion are huge and are passed on to the consumer. Mothers who do not have access to human milk from a healthy donor and must resort to processed milk from another species are the ones who ultimately pay the highest price for the excessive and wanton distribution of promotional samples. Would you feel the same way if someone who had no signs whatsoever of diabetes begging you for a promotional sample of insulin?

Increasingly, health care practitioners are beginning to recognize that promotional samples create conflicts of interest about the most healthy choices for their patients.

And for patients who do need insulin, doesn't the hospital pass along the costs in one form or another to that patient or to insurance or to a government that supports health care? And many countries do have health care systems that have policies within hospitals for caring for indigent patients and providing them with needed supplies. That is different from giving out promotional samples from the marketing department of a particular company.

Best,
Susan Burger
