You are so right about moms not taking in much of what they are taught in
hosp. It does help them to have a bf class prenatally I feel, so they have
some idea of what to expect and are somewhat familiar with positioning etc.
Often I see the moms on the second day when my coworker ibclc has seen them
on the first day or vice versa. Often the positioning is so lousy and the
latch too of course, even though I know my coworker is an excellent LC and
taught the proper way. The mom just didn't absorb it on that maybe only one
LC encounter. Some lactnetters may remember my post a while back about a
"nursing home" where the moms all go when dishcharged from hospital and get
to all bed in with their babies in a sort of cottage retreat. Having a doula
at home is the same principle. I have found especially with multiple births,
and especially if other sibs in the home, their is an extreme need for a pp
doula there in the early days/weeks of learning to bf more than one baby.
