I've had long, interesting conversations with Nancy Schweers about the
"rights" issue as it pertains to mothers and babies. It's really risky to
pit the "rights" of the infant to the mother's milk against the mother's
rights to use her body as she wishes. Nancy always encouraged me to focus on
the "inseparable dyad" concept, which is so brilliantly articulated on page
3, bullet point 3 in the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding:
"Mothers and babies form an inseparable biological and social unit; the
health and nutrition of one group cannot be divorced from the health and
nutrition of the other."

(Nancy is a former LLL Leader, IBCLC, and now is a hospital chaplain. She
and a handful of others were almost singlehandedly responsible for getting
the BF funding into the 1989 WIC reauthorization. She's truly an unsung hero
in this work.)
