Greetings. With mom's permission to post, we are hoping to locate a child dietician/nutritionist in the Houston/San Antonio/Dallas area of Texas for breastfeeding-friendly guidance. She is still nursing her 14 month old twice a day. Had planned to wean at 12 months but did not because child had numerous allergic reactions to many foods since they were introduced at age 6 months. Does not feel as if always having best pedi support after was once suggested to wean to a soy formula because of allergies. Mom has been offering rice milk and/or goat milk since age 1, as nursing naturally tapered. Child eats offered solid foods well and follows a low allergen, gluten free diet which is primarily organic, home-made and with components of vegan eating. Mom offers low-density, high caloric food choices as best she can within list of known foods that child is not allergic to. Child has not changed significantly on growth curve for weight, but has dropped dramatically on height, not increasing at all since age 9 months. She has visible leaned down but still has some extra "padding" on her thighs and tummy. Was recently referred by pedi to dietician who insisted that she instantly wean and then begin to feed toddler formula throughout every day to renourish this child. Mom felt crushed as she understood her to say that her child is not growing because she is mal-nourished and has been for many months. The child is otherwise happy and developmentally appropriate. Mom was considering pumping to increase supply and have breastmilk available for the sippy cup but is now scared after this consult. Her intuition was that the decree to wean was bad advice. She actually went to this consult seeking assistance with new food options/ideas and was surprised when weaning and formula was discussed. She now desires a second opinion but prefers to see someone with a reputation for valuing the importance of human milk. Any suggestions? We would appreciate it very much. Warmly, Shannon, RN, IBCLC
