Spoke to my HTC today. Seems Alphanate is neither recombinant nor a
monoclonal/heat treated product. It is a solvent detergent washed Factor
VIII, which places it 3rd in line of choice for purity when ONLY factor 8
replacement is necessary. It is, however, FIRST choice for Von Willebrand
treatment as it contains the Von Willebrand Factor in addition to Factor VIII.
Apparently, the heat processing and genetic manufacture of the purer products
drastically decreases the available levels of vWF -- the very substance your
patient needs to control her bleeding (low factor VIII levels are only a
secondary symptom in vW patients).

My HTC agrees that treatment posses no threat to breastfeeding and that the
risk of this patient contracting HIV through Alphanate infusion and/or passing
it on to her baby through bf is no greater than for any other patient who
receives any form of human blood products today.
