This is a copy of the letter I just sent. My question is, if the AAP does
go ahead with this plan, will LLL choose to remain "connected" with them
for future conferences? If LLL chooses not to carry the book in its book
store because of this decision, then it would seem that this also would
endanger the validity of other association until marketing is less
important to the AAP then reputation. Just a thought.

Dear Ms. DeRosa:
With abject dismay and horror I understand that the AAP will be permitting
Ross Labs to advertise and disperse the AAP's newest publication" New
Mother's Guide to Breastfeeding".
I know you will receive many emails and letters from other concerned
healthcare providers about this marketing decision and I hope you will
review this decision.
With all the significant work the AAP has undertaken to promote
successful breastfeeding within the US to meet the Surgeon General and
World Health recommendations, this decision undermines the credibility of
their prior leadership role. Research and recommendations worldwide
recognize the subtle undermining of successful breastfeeding when formula
sponsored marketing becomes involved.
I have to date attended many AAP/LLL conferences and utilized AAP
publications for patient and medical staff education, treating it as a
creditable resource for unbiased information. Unfortunately, if the plan to
permit Ross labs to be associated with the "new Mother's Breastfeeding
Guide" becomes a reality, I will personally be unable to support further
AAP sponsored programs or materials because of this taint.
I hope you all will reconsider this plan. The AAP currently has a strong
enough reputation in regard to breastfeeding promotion that the book will
easily sell itself. There is no need to degrade the AAP or the authors of
the book by "selling out" to try and guarantee more income.
Sincerely;
