Here in sunny UAE we see many many cases of rickets due to the extreme dress
and confinement traditions after birth.
It seems to me to be an ethical issue-in this case a religious and cultural
tradition compromising the health of women and babies.
I wonder if sensitively challenging these traditions; liaising with
community peer leaders etc is a more long-term beneficial and responsible
approach. Cultural and religious traditions can be malleable…
But I realise it becomes an even more difficult area in sun-poor regions,
unlike here with 18 hours everyday of direct sunlight.
