Dear Friends:
I typed in 'infant formula and renal function' in the google search
engine and got some sites that would be interesting to Katie Bredbeck. Typing in
a specific phrase in google always brings results.
Anecdotally, some nurses who worked in NICU and were participants in a
lactation counselor training class I taught spoke about this. Because human
milk substitutes have the same caloric/solute density in every drop, it can be
a challenge to give a premie or otherwise compromised baby enough nutrients
orally without also giving too much fluid.
Paula Meier's technique of bioengineering human milk is very helpful for
babies on fluid restriction. This enables milk given to the baby to have its
fat content increased, while keeping the fluid restriction. Also human milk
has a low solute load, with a consequent low stress on the wee kidneys.
    warmly,
