The symphony pump was not really developed FROM Peter Hartmann's
research, the pump development and the research were concurrent. There
were compromises made in the effectiveness of the pump to suit
commercial constraints (to make it cheap enough to produce) and maternal
acceptance (a significant minority of moms did not like the most
effective pattern, so the second most effective pattern was chosen). I
don't think that this pump is any great advance, personally. It is
another pump that might be helpful for some women, but the research did
NOT show it was better than the old classic in terms of milk yield. The
symphony pump running the Classic pattern was not as good as the
symphony running the symphony pattern, but the classic pump itself
yielded more milk for some moms.
Unfortunately, we don't yet have a pump that works for all moms.
