Some women need to use the gentian violet off and on for the entire nursing 
period.  I also find that many times if there are deep cracks it helps to 
apply bactorban ointment to try and keep it "clean" as it heals. But it is 
CRUCIAL (if deep cracks at the base of nipple are present) to be sure the 
cracks are held OPEN between feedings so it can heal from the bottom of the 
wound up.  Shells are usually necessary for this.  Otherwise the edges of 
the wound try to heal together and are ripped back apart every few hours.
