Hi All,
I love the definitions of cults that Gena put out for us. And while I agree
wholeheartedly that we a re hardly a *Breastfeeding Cult*, we must remember
that there are those out there (we know who they are) who have excellant
writing skills and can take these definitions and *Make* them fit into
anything they want. Thereby making breastfeeding advocates look like full
fledged cultists, and worse.
The key here is to help others to see that the breastfeeding community is
just that; a community that lives to help mothers and babies, and in helping
these mothers and babies, we help our future as well.
Today we had our first training session for our new Peer Counselors. I
taught a part of the class, and one of the things I talked about was what
wonderful things breastmilk protected infants from, and also the long term
effects of breastfeeding. I brought up the fact that we are now seeing many
more cases of breast cancer, high cholesterol, and many other health
problems. When I told the class that breastfeeding greatly reduced the risk
of these types of health problems they were surprised, and pleased. When I
pointed out that the majority of people with these problems right now were
most likely ABM fed, the lights went on in their brains! They realized that
the ABM companies *experiments* were finally yielding their results on the
adult population. So now, not only do todays ABM fed babies suffer, but
those of us who were ABM fed (like myself) are also starting to suffer. I
told the class outright that I was afraid of what problems I was going to
have as a result of my mother's *Choice* of infant feeding.
Anyway, I digress (happened in class too! I have a hard time staying on
topic! :/ ).
My point is that if we can show people that books such as BWG are biased,
one-sided totally innacurrate, and angry, then they can see that they haven't
been given the *truth* about *Infant feeding choices*, they've been handed a
plateful of lies.
