Hi,
While in High School in Northern VA, I used to open mail at the White House
on Saturday mornings (how to get away from your parents and have a day in
DC...and get to go to a bang-up Christmas party, catch of glimpse of the
first family and have free run of the downstairs at the White House) anyway
I know first hand the practices, I doubt they've changed much, except to add
e-mail to the categories.

Mail is opened and sorted by a variety of volunteer groups (most little ole
ladies in tennis shoes, tee hee, a neat group!) and sorted by subject (some
are really sad, like "kid begging help, no home")

The President and his advisors get a list of subjects and numbers of letters
received in each. A small sampling of examples from each group is also
handed over -- but usually just the really heart wrenching ones.

No one got replies in snail mail days, I doubt there is enough time or
resources to do that now either... but every letter is counted! So WRITE,
but don't spend a lot of time being creative, the volunteers that open the
mail don't much care and the detailed why's and wherefores are not included
in the counts!

We also used to address the Birthday, Anniversary, and Christmas Cards to
the "A-list" -- movie stars and the like....

anne, who used to know Charleton Heston's home address by heart... and cant'
wait to see DC again at the LLLI Conference over 4th of July!!!
