This is particularly common in preterm babies. Other risk factors include vegan/vegetarian mothers, some medications, and absorption issues like short bowel syndrome. 

 The answer, if there are no underlying issues that need addressing, is usually to keep breastfeeding and give the baby an appropriate prescribed zinc supplement.
