My second son, like another mentioned here, went through a short
stretch (a week or less?) when he slept 11 hours at night. Then he
started waking frequently again. At the time, I thought it was an
interesting anomaly in my obviously thriving child, enjoyed the
unbroken sleep, and gave it no further thought. Now I wonder.

At that time, he started every night in a cradle, coming into bed with
us as soon as he woke the first time. Not waking, of course, meant he
spent the whole night away from us. When he wakened early, he spent
the whole night with us. If I had to guess, I'd say that the 11 hour
stretch
marked a baby *who was having difficulty self-rousing,* and who thus
had a greater than average, not lower than average, need to be in our
bed.
A very scary thought in retrospect.
