Having adopted all of my four children through open adoptions, I can speak
of my experience in this matter. Once consents are signed, baby is in the
care of the adoptive family. How they choose to feed the baby is up to them.

I was open with our childrens birthmothers about nursing and nursed my
second son the day he was born, with her blessing. If people are uncomfortable
with talking about it, the best thing to do may be to simply be quiet until
babe is home. But considering the new AAP guidelines on breastfeeding, it
sounds like adoptive nursing and relactation are to be encourged in situations
such as these!

So being upfront and talking about why breastfeeding is so necessary is a
good discussion to have. Even encouraging the birthmother to nurse has so many
benefits for the baby, who should be who comes first in these arrangements.
It also gives the birthmother the security in knowing she gave her baby
something no-one else could and means she can look back with no regrets. Many
birthmothers want to nurse but are too shy to bring it up.

Please feel free to email me to discuss this further if necessary.
