If this mom is not going until the end of July, hopefully she can
stockpile enough milk so baby at least won't have to get formula.
This might also mean that mom will go into this with a larger than
needed supply so if there is any drop secondary to the restrictive
diet (and there is no certainty that that would happen) mom won't
have so far to go to build it up again. Perhaps some of the EBM can
be given by cup by age 6 months so baby will be eager for more
suckling once mom is "available" again. It is wonderful that baby
will at least be with her so they can continue their togetherness
and baby won't have to deal with losing both mom and the nursing at
the same time.

It is very frustrating when moms make what to us are less than ideal
choices. However, it always bugs me to hear people say, "I would
never......" or "I had the same circumstance and I didn't........."
I try to remind myself that no matter how many of her circumstances
may be similar to those I have had or worked with, I have never been
that mom with that particular concern at that particular moment in
her life amidst the same personal, medical, family etc. confounding
factors. At the same time, she will never again be in exactly the
same situation. Each individual puts her or his own weight/value on
each of the factors leading to any decision. Our responsibility
isn't to make any desicion for her, but to share with her the
options and possible outcomes based on the area of her decision
making that is within our sphere of expertise. I don't think we
should totally omit general parenting suggestions, but we need to be
able to distinguish between what we offer as lactation "experts", as
parenting educators, or as another parent who may have experiences
that have some similarity to her present dilemma. Many times moms
seem to want us to tell them what to do similar to a doc writing a
prescription to take such and such a pill at 9 and 5 each day.
Breastfeeding and parenting just doesn't lend itself to such
absolutes! We need to remind not only moms, but ourselves of this
difference.
