Wendy Oddy and colleagues published a great study recently in Australia
on cultures of pink, sore nipples. They found staph in most of them,
candida in very few. The treatment arm of the study found that
antibiotics (oral) was most likely to clear the pain and pinkness,
hygiene (washing with soap and water) also helped 30% of moms. Since we
are having such poor results with yeast treatment, I strongly suspect
they are right.
Any infection makes the skin more fragile, but I'd want to know what
baby is doing with his tongue as well. Sometimes the tongue tip is
thrusting against that cracked area.
