I have been asked to seek the collective wisdom of "feeding Experts" here on
Lactnet. (It's nice to know that the peds. look at LC's as feeding experts
for formula fed infants as well)
Concern was raised among our pediatricians regarding the sharp increase in the
use of Lactofee formula by formula fed infants in our hospital. It appears
that if the baby spits up once or twice the nurses are switching the formula.
Pediatric Committee prime concern is that galactosemia (although rare ) would
go undiagnosed until after damage occurred. They also expressed minor concern
about the sugars in this product and brain/nervous system function.
Would someone more enlightened than myself on the mechanism here related to
this product and galactosemia? Is this really a valid concern? Would you say
it is valid enough to make an across the board ban of Lactofree from the
nursery and post partum areas?
