I wish people would stop using urate crystals as a sign of dehydration
in the early days. We tell patients that baby may pass them in the first
3 days of life due to them being in his urinary tract and they need to
come out. If parents see them after day 3 they may be forming again and
this could be a sign of lack of fluid. Then the parents can check the
mucus membranes between the baby's lower lip and his gumline. If this
appears dry then the parents should take the temperature. If the temp is
above 100 degrees under the arm, the mucus membranes are dry and the
baby is urinating less than once Q 6 hours after day three, then to call
the physician.
We don't use the word DEHYDRATION. We say NOT WELL HYDRATED.
