Absolutely I agree that hospital routines need to be addressed first so that
moms are able to get rest and help w/ feedings. Also facilitating early and
effective feeds and 24 hr rooming in (BFHI CRITERIA ANYWAY) will pretty much
take care of things. Actually I would love to work where moms and babies are
in bed together all in a large ward where I can flit around helping and
supporting.
It is so hard just supporting and promoting ANY breastfeeding, and even
harder promoting and supporting EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding, but exclusive bf is
what is needed. Therefore, I promote it and sometimes use the "desert
island" analogy:
Pretend you and baby are on a desert island. You have plenty to eat such as
coconuts, fish, and fruit but you don't have that formula discharge pack
with you, yet you have your breasts. I ask a)The baby feeds from both
breasts but seems to want more....what would you do?
b)The baby seems to want to feed again in 20 minutes? What would you do?
c)The baby feeds frequently at nite and you are tired, what would you do?
The obvious answers: a)put him back to breast, b)put him back to breast,
c)sleep more during the day, sleep with the baby.
