Barbie, probably you have already thought about this, but if the mom has a
particularly strong let down -- or, let's say, strong for this baby's
tolerance -- then the baby's reason for acting aversive could actually be
reinforced in the process of what otherwise look like successful feedings.

I have seen a few babies who haven't really learned to latch and feed
fabulously before the mother's supply becomes huge, who then have to cope
with a firehose in the face while they are struggling to latch -- or who just
fear havibg to cope with it, based on their limited but real experience.

If this might be a contributing factor, one would expect it to be easier for
the baby to latch and nurse sidelying, where the baby has more control over
his own head and so doesn't need to fight, and also where gravity is
diminishing the extent to which the firehose really is shooting at the back
of his poor little throat.

This would be true whether the incompatibility was primarily due to mom's
strong supply or to baby's relative intolerance of the force. But if I
found sidelying did help I would also probably recheck other oversupply
measures, just in case.

sometimes they really are zebras, but I'm still busy learning to identify
horses :)
